Writing a novel has given Dennis more pleasure than he can easily account for. The fluid identities of its characters reflect his own experience of the world, which he aims to convey through witty observation and an undercurrent of building psychological cruelty. He is fascinated by the promise of greatness we feel when young and the quiet disappointment of who we become.
After completing a Fine Art degree at the University of Cape Town, Dennis began his career as a journalist in the pre-digital and early internet era. Revelling in the vitality of South Africa’s transition to democracy in the mid-nineties, he wrote about art and youth culture and the experience of transformation.
Then he moved to London to embrace more of the world, where he worked at the BBC for several years as a sub-editor. Although his career took several unexpected turns, from design to brand to photography, there was always a novel in the background. Then one day, he made the time. He sat down and finally finished it.
